Living with temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMJ) can be difficult, but TMJ physiotherapy can offer relief.
If you’re constantly battling TMJ pain and it seems like you’ve tried everything without any success, frustrate, the recovery journey of one of our TMJ patients might resonate.
Meet TMJ patient Genna and her journey of pain and frustration
My name is Genna, and my journey with TMJ began during my school years. Initially, it was just occasional cracking and popping noises in my jaw. However, as I entered my 20s, the pain intensified, especially during stressful times or when eating tough or chewy foods. By my late 20s, the pain became unbearable. It spread to my neck, often accompanied by debilitating headaches.
One day, my jaw locked up completely, sending me into a panic. Desperate for relief, I turned to online forums and Facebook groups for TMJ sufferers, but the experiences shared there were mainly negative, offering little solace or practical advice.
TMJ Treatments, trials and tribulations
My first attempt at seeking professional help led me to a dentist who proposed an expensive and risky procedure costing $10,000. However, their uncertainty and lack of confidence in the outcome made me hesitant.
Undeterred, I sought out a specialist in TMJ disorders who recommended a custom-made retainer to wear at night. Unfortunately, the discomfort of the retainer outweighed any benefits, and I soon abandoned it in frustration.
With the pain becoming unbearable and painkillers offering only temporary relief, I turned to the hospital, considering surgery as a last resort. However, they suggested exploring physiotherapy before opting for invasive measures.
The turning point: physio for TMJ
After undergoing X-rays, I was referred to a physiotherapist who specialised in TMJ conditions. Through targeted massages and personalised exercises, I began to experience significant improvement.
Within weeks, my jaw’s range of motion increased from 1.2cm to an incredible 4.5cm, and the constant pain eased. I could finally eat all my favourite foods again, and it didn’t hurt to laugh or smile!
TMJ physiotherapists are a game-changer
Physiotherapy emerged as a pivotal turning point in my battle with TMJ. While it may not promise a complete cure, its impact on my quality of life has been profound.
Targeted therapies and tailored exercises are invaluable tools to manage flare-ups and alleviate symptoms effectively. As a result, the once-overwhelming limitations imposed by my TMJ condition have diminished significantly.
I now navigate my daily life with newfound freedom and confidence, empowered by the knowledge that I can effectively address and mitigate the challenges TMJ poses.
