Do you have osteoporosis or osteopenia? We cover why you need to take bone health seriously and more below.
Why are healthy bones important?
Did you know that after the age of 35, we start losing bone density at a rate of 0.5–2% per year? And if you’re a woman, that number skyrockets after menopause. In Australia, osteoporosis affects around 15-20% of women and 3-6% of men—and that’s just the ones diagnosed.
The reality? Your bones could be getting weaker without you even realising it. And weak bones don’t just mean a little extra caution when walking. They mean an increased risk of fractures from simple falls, everyday movements, or even a strong sneeze (yes, really). But here’s the good news: your bones aren’t a lost cause. You can actually build and maintain bone strength, and we’re here to help you do exactly that.
What are bone fit classes for osteoporosis and bone health?
Bone Fit is a class designed to help your bones get stronger through the two things they need most: resistance training and impact loading.
- Resistance training strengthens muscles, which in turn pulls on bones, encouraging them to increase in density.
- Impact loading (think light jumping, stomping, or jogging) gives bones the ‘jolts’ they need to stay strong.
But that’s not all. We also focus on balance training because falls and fractures go hand in hand. If we improve your balance, we reduce your risk of falling, which means fewer chances for fractures in the first place.
Who should join bone fit classes for osteoporosis prevention?
If you’ve been diagnosed with osteopenia or osteoporosis, or you’re looking to be proactive about your bone health, these classes are for you.
If you’re concerned about losing strength as you age, or you want to keep doing the activities you love (without worrying about a simple trip ending in a hospital visit), then you’ll want to sign up.
Because here’s the truth: bones don’t improve on their own. You have to actively work at it, and exercise is the best ways to do that. Pair it with good nutrition and any medical treatments recommended by your doctor, and you’re giving yourself the best shot at keeping your bones strong for life.
