What Is Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus?

Type 2 Diabetes is a metabolic condition characterised by insulin resistance.

Insulin is the hormone responsible for transporting glucose (sugar) from the bloodstream into the muscles to be used as energy. When insulin does not function effectively:

  • Blood sugar levels remain elevated

  • Less glucose is available for energy

  • The body struggles to regulate blood sugar properly

Common Symptoms of Type 2 Diabetes

  • Excessive thirst

  • Frequent urination

  • Increased hunger

  • Elevated blood glucose levels

  • Fatigue and low energy

Without proper management, Type 2 Diabetes can progress and lead to serious long-term complications.

How Exercise Improves Type 2 Diabetes

Exercise is one of the most effective non-pharmacological treatments for insulin resistance.Regular physical activity

  • Improves insulin sensitivity
  • Lowers blood glucose levels
  • Supports weight management
  • Improves cardiovascular health
  • Increases muscle mass and metabolic function

Importantly, exercise can increase insulin sensitivity for up to 72 hours after a session. For this reason, structured exercise is recommended at least twice per week for optimal blood sugar control.
