Daily physio blocks for children with cerebral palsy, motor delays and other neurological and developmental conditions, at North West Physiotherapy Lutwyche in Brisbane’s inner north.
What is intensive therapy?
Intensive therapy packs a lot of physio into a short time. Instead of one session a week, your child comes in every weekday for one or two weeks, for between 2 and 3 hours a day.
We run intensive therapy blocks at North West Physiotherapy Lutwyche. Across the North West Physio group, children with neurological and developmental conditions are seen at Lutwyche.
How a block works
| Detail | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Length | 1 or 2 weeks |
| Days | Monday to Friday, on dates that suit your family |
| Hours a day | 2 to 3, depending on your child’s needs |
| Where | A private treatment room at Lutwyche, with the clinic gym close by |
| Who | Vince Travia, Principal Physiotherapist. Paediatric training: APA Paediatrics Level 1, Cuevas Medek Exercises Level 1 |
| Approach | The Intensive Model of Therapy (IMOT): therapy exercises mixed with play to keep your child motivated |
Before, during and after
- Assessment first. We see your child for an assessment, talk through what you’d like them to work on (for example sitting, standing, stepping or using their hands), and agree on goals for the block.
- The block. Every session works towards those goals. Exercises are mixed with play to keep your child motivated.
- After the block. You go home with a home program, and we reassess every 3 to 6 months.
- Reports. NDIS participants get written reports for plan reviews and funding requests.
What are Cuevas Medek Exercises?
Cuevas Medek Exercises (CME) is a children’s physiotherapy method for motor delay, developed by physiotherapist Ramon Cuevas.
The physio gradually holds your child further from the body as they get stronger, for example at the legs instead of the trunk. Your child then has to react and hold themselves up against gravity.
At Lutwyche, CME can be part of an intensive block or used in weekly sessions. Read more about Cuevas Medek Exercises at Lutwyche.
Who it’s for
Intensive therapy may suit babies, children and teenagers who have:
- cerebral palsy
- Down syndrome
- another neurological or developmental condition
- motor delays: rolling, sitting, crawling, standing or walking later than expected
