Women’s Health Conditions We Treat

Conditions we treat regularly include:

    • Pregnancy-related lower back, pelvic, and hip pain
    • Urinary incontinence, including stress and urge incontinence
    • Overactive bladder and bladder retraining
    • Bowel concerns, including faecal incontinence and constipation
    • Diastasis recti (abdominal separation)
    • Pelvic organ prolapse, including pessary fitting
    • Pelvic floor dysfunction
    • Chronic pelvic pain, including endometriosis and bladder pain syndrome

Many women put up with these symptoms for years, assuming they’re just part of having children or getting older. Early assessment means we can identify what’s actually driving your symptoms and build a treatment plan that addresses the cause.

Women’s Health Assessment

A women’s health assessment is a thorough, private appointment with a physiotherapist trained specifically in pelvic floor and women’s health. Rather than guessing at what’s going on, your physio takes the time to understand your symptoms, your history, and your goals, then assesses what’s happening.

A women’s health assessment typically covers:

    • A detailed discussion of your symptoms and history
    • Assessment of your pelvic floor muscle strength and function
    • Real time ultrasound imaging where appropriate
    • Assessment of your abdominal wall and posture
    • A clear explanation of what’s going on and what’s driving it

From there your physio builds a treatment plan tailored to you, whether that means strengthening a weak pelvic floor, releasing overactive muscles, or guiding a safe return to exercise after having a baby.

Women’s Health Physiotherapy FAQs

What does a women’s health physiotherapist treat?

A women’s health physiotherapist assesses and treats conditions related to the pelvic floor, bladder, bowel, and pelvis, along with the physical changes that come with pregnancy and menopause. At North West Physiotherapy this includes incontinence, prolapse, pregnancy-related pain, abdominal separation, chronic pelvic pain, and pelvic floor weakness. Your treatment is always tailored to your symptoms and your stage of life.

Do I need a referral to see a women’s health physio?

No. You can book directly online or by phone at North West Physiotherapy, no referral needed. If you have a referral from a GP, obstetrician, or specialist, bring it along, as it may help with your claiming a medicare rebate or give your physio useful background information.

What happens during a women’s health appointment?

Your first appointment starts with a private, unhurried conversation about your symptoms, history, and goals. Your physio will then assess your pelvic floor and abdominal muscles, often using real time ultrasound, and explain clearly what’s going on. You’ll leave understanding what’s driving your symptoms and with a treatment plan to address them.

Can I see a women’s health physio during pregnancy?

Yes. Women’s health physiotherapy is safe and beneficial throughout pregnancy. We help with pregnancy-related back, pelvic, and hip pain, prepare your body for birth, and provide supervised exercise for higher-risk pregnancies. Seeing a physio during pregnancy can also make your postnatal recovery smoother.
