Types of Back Pain
For those who have experienced or are living with back pain, it’s definitely not fun. Here are three different types of back pain, the symptoms to look out for and the treatment to help soothe the pain.
Chronic Back Pain
Chronic pain may begin with dull aches or pains but can become more severe. It’s usually more common in those aged 35-55.
The cause of chronic pain actually builds up over time and can be due to poor posture. Lower back pain typically stems from a lack of abdominal muscle tone, especially when sitting. Chronic pain can also be caused by workplace environmental factors and ergonomics.
TREATMENT: We recommend massage and stretches but with a big focus also on core strengthening exercises and postural advice to prevent recurrence of symptoms.
Acute (rapid onset) Back Pain
This type of back pain is characterised by severe, sudden pain and can affect anyone over the age of 18.
Acute onset pain, such as a bulging disk, is caused by weakening in the lining of the spine cushioning, which then hits a nerve. It is sometimes caused by poor posture. It will reoccur if muscles are not re-educated via muscle strengthening.
TREATMENT: The best treatment is with joint mobilisations and stretches, dry needling, heat packs and massage as well as advice on gentle exercises to get out of this acute phase.
Workplace Back Pain
This pain can be a dull ache which presents over a period of time or can be sharp with a sudden onset. It is typically a result of the environment and nature of work. For example – tradespeople that bend frequently, or nursing or retail staff that are on their feet for long periods.
It’s usually caused by overuse or injury, resulting in torn muscles and ligaments.
TREATMENT: Massage, stretches, core strengthening as well as ergonomic advice including looking at your workplace set-up.
