Are you struggling with hip or knee osteoarthritis? Do everyday activities like walking or gardening cause you pain? If so, the GLAD program may be just what you need to improve your quality of life and overall physical function.
What is the GLAD Program?
The GLAD (Good Life with Arthritis from Denmark) program is an exercise-based routine designed to provide a better functional outcome for people with hip or knee osteoarthritis. The program focuses on improving muscle strength and joint movement, both of which can reduce osteoarthritis symptoms such as joint pain, loss of joint movement, and reduced functional ability.
Who is the GLAD Program for?
The program is designed for anyone with hip or knee osteoarthritis, from mild to severe. Very few people with osteoarthritis will be unsuitable for the program. Whether you’re young or old, active or inactive, the GLAD program can help you move pain-free and improve your quality of life.
How to get involved with the GLAD Program?
Joining the GLAD program is easy. Simply book in for an assessment. During the assessment, your physiotherapist will evaluate your condition and recommend an appropriate plan tailored to your needs.
What can you expect in the GLAD Program?
The GLAD program consists of two sessions per week for eight weeks, either in a group or individual setting. During the program, you’ll learn a range of exercises and activities, such as step-ups, getting up and down from a chair, and hip slides in a standing position. These exercises are tailored to address muscle strength and joint movement, and as a result, reduce osteoarthritis symptoms.
Participants are also provided with a lot of information and support throughout the program. This includes written information to help better understand the condition. Additionally, moral support, and encouragement from being in a group setting.
By the end of the program, you’ll be able to continue exercising on your own, three times per week for 20-30 minutes, to maintain the benefits of the program.
What are the key benefits of the GLAD Program?
The GLAD program can provide numerous benefits to individuals with osteoarthritis, such as:
Reduced Joint Pain:
By strengthening your muscles and improving joint movement, you can reduce joint pain and move more freely.
Improved Range of Motion:
With regular exercises, you can increase your range of motion, enabling you to perform everyday activities with greater ease.
Improved Physical Function:
By reducing your joint pain and improving your range of motion, you’ll be able to perform physical activities with greater ease and without pain.
Avoid Planned Orthopaedic Surgery:
In some cases, the GLAD program can result in clients not needing planned orthopaedic surgery.
