Have you ever wondered if physiotherapy would be beneficial for the management of your arthritis?
Our trusted team of health professionals across Brisbane’s northside are highly experienced when it comes to developing personalised treatments for arthritis.
Below we share some more information about arthritis, including common symptoms and strategies for management.
What is Arthritis?
Arthritis is a condition that affects one or more joints, often resulting in pain and stiffness in affected areas. Typically, this occurs when wear and tear on joints causes a reduction of protective cartilage.
The term arthritis is used to describe inflammation in the joints, however there are more than 100 different types of arthritis and some are not necessarily the result of inflammation.
At North West Physio, the most frequent kinds of arthritis we see are Osteoarthritis (OA) and Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA).
Although many different joints can be affected, we often see arthritis impacting the hips, knees, wrist, hand and spinal joints.
Common Symptoms of Arthritis
Generally speaking, many people with arthritis experience some of the following symptoms at their affected joint/s:
- Frequent pain or tenderness
- Heat or redness
- Swelling
- Immobility
- Stiffness
Physiotherapy For Arthritis
When it comes to managing and treating aches and stiffness associated with arthritis, there are different management strategies targeted at each type of arthritis.
That’s why our physiotherapists will assess your symptoms and condition before creating a personalised treatment plan.
No matter what type of arthritis you have though, your plan will likely aim to reduce your pain and stiffness, improve function, minimise damage to your joints and namely improve your quality of life.
Your physiotherapy plan will often include:
- Joint mobilisation techniques,
- Soft tissue release, and
- A well-prescribed exercise program which aims to strengthen and de-load the impacted joints.
Combining the above strategies within your management plan can improve strength, stability, circulation, joint lubrication, and posture, as well as restore muscle balance and maintain or increase movement.
Management of arthritis also often includes Pilates, hydrotherapy, and physio-led exercises classes. If required, a GP may also prescribe medication.
