What is Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM)?
Gestational Diabetes Mellitus is a type of carbohydrate intolerance that develops during pregnancy, typically diagnosed between 24-28 weeks of gestation. It’s characterised by elevated blood glucose levels, which usually return to normal after childbirth. However, having GDM increases the risk of developing type 2 diabetes in the future and having GDM in subsequent pregnancies.
Gestational diabetes symptoms and signs
GDM often doesn’t present noticeable symptoms, so regular screening is crucial. However, if blood sugar levels become too high, some women might experience:
- Increased thirst
- Dry mouth
- Blurred vision
- Increased fatigue
- Frequent urination
These symptoms can also occur in a healthy pregnancy, so it’s always best to consult your Obstetrician or Midwife if you have any concerns.
Monitoring gestational diabetes
Routine screening for GDM is generally done with an Oral Glucose Tolerance Test around 24-28 weeks of pregnancy.
If diagnosed with GDM, your healthcare team will guide you on how to monitor your blood glucose levels and discuss strategies to manage it effectively. Management often includes dietary adjustments, learning to use a blood glucose monitor, and incorporating physical activity into your routine. This is where we come in!
How can our women’s health clinic assist with Gestational Diabetes Mellitus?
Our clinic is dedicated to supporting expectant mothers in managing and preventing GDM. Here’s how:
- Physical activity: regular exercise is a cornerstone of managing blood sugar levels and improving insulin resistance. It also helps with reducing blood pressure complications and boosting overall mood. We can work with you to develop a safe and effective exercise routine that fits your needs.
- Personalised exercise programs: we offer one-on-one consultations where you can discuss your specific needs and create an achievable exercise plan. Whether you’re dealing with pregnancy-related aches or just need a tailored fitness plan, our experienced Physiotherapists and Exercise Physiologists are here to help.
- Prenatal reformer Pilates: we offer small group prenatal reformer Pilates classes. These classes are designed to ensure you engage in safe, supervised exercises that promote strength and mobility throughout your pregnancy.
Role of physical therapy in managing GDM
Physical therapy can play a significant role in managing GDM. Regular, tailored exercise can help you maintain optimal blood glucose levels, improve your overall fitness, and address any discomfort you might be experiencing. Our team is here to guide you through safe and effective exercises, considering your individual needs and any pregnancy-related challenges you might face.
Gestational diabetes diet: lifestyle and dietary recommendations
In addition to physical activity, dietary adjustments are crucial. The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists recommends aiming for 150-300 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise per week, ideally in 30-minute sessions. This should include a mix of aerobic, strength, and mobility exercises. However, every pregnancy is unique, so we’ll work together to create a plan that suits your specific situation.
