Pelvic floor physiotherapy for muscles post-pregnancy supports recovery and overall well-being.
Embracing the arrival of a new life is a wondrous journey, but it does take a toll on the body – particularly on the pelvic floor muscles.
At North West Physio Everton Park, we prioritise post-pregnancy pelvic health with understanding and care.
In this women’s health series instalment, we delve into the significance of pelvic floor muscles, the benefits of post-pregnancy pelvic exercises, and how to access support through our specialised services.
Understanding the pelvic floor muscles
The pelvic floor muscles are a crucial group of muscles that form the base of the pelvic cavity. They serve multiple functions, including:
- supporting pelvic organs
- maintaining urinary and faecal continence
- contributing to sexual function
- offering dynamic core stability for the pelvis and lower back
Exercises post pregnancy: physical and emotional recovery
After childbirth, the pelvic floor muscles undergo significant changes, which can be distressing for new mothers.
Engaging in pelvic exercises post-pregnancy not only aids in physical recovery but also promotes emotional well-being by restoring control and function to these vital muscles.
Commencing pelvic floor exercises post-birth
The timing for starting pelvic exercises post-birth varies based on individual circumstances, including any birth-related trauma.
Generally, women can begin gentle pelvic floor exercises as soon as they feel comfortable, which can help reduce swelling, promote healing, and stimulate blood flow to the area.
Recommended pelvic floor muscle exercises for women post-birth
We recommend two exercises to target pelvic floor muscles:
Pelvic floor muscle activation:
Gently squeeze the front and/or back passages, lifting them upward into the pelvis without holding your breath. Aim for repetitions corresponding to the number of weeks postnatal.
Deep abdominal muscle activation:
Focus on gently drawing your belly button towards your back while exhaling, mimicking a ‘hugging’ motion.
For a more personalised approach and exercises tailored to your individual needs, please book an appointment with one of our women’s health physiotherapists, Belinda Suitor or Maree Sweetman. They can provide comprehensive assessments and design
Factors affecting post-pregnancy exercises
Several factors can make pelvic exercises more challenging or less effective, including birth trauma, exhaustion from labour, and lack of prior pelvic floor training.
Role of exercises in addressing postpartum issues
Post-pregnancy exercises are crucial in preventing and addressing common postpartum issues like urinary incontinence or pelvic organ prolapse by restoring strength, coordination, endurance, and dynamic control of the pelvic floor muscles.
Duration and progression of post-pregnancy exercises
Pelvic floor exercises should be integrated into daily routines for lifelong pelvic health. Under the guidance of a women’s health physiotherapist, exercises can be modified to increase repetitions, endurance, speed, and resistance as women progress postnatally.
