If you’ve just welcomed a new baby into the world, or you’re preparing for the birth of your child, we’re here to help with all your postnatal physiotherapy Brisbane needs.
While it can be challenging to prioritise your self-care and health during the 4th trimester, our women’s health specialists are here to help with a smooth recovery.
At North West Physiotherapy, we offer a range of postnatal treatment options and strongly believe visiting an experienced physiotherapist can aid recovery from childbirth and prevent some conditions from worsening.
In this blog we share:
- Common post-birth issues
- How soon after childbirth you can see a physio
- Why it’s a good idea to see a physio while pregnant
- Pre- and Postnatal classes we typically offer
If you have any further questions about any of our women’s health or postnatal physiotherapist service, please get in touch with our friendly team or book an appointment at our Everton Park clinic or our Eatons Hill clinic.
Common Issues Women Experience After Birth
Everyone’s body is impacted by the stresses and strains of pregnancy, childbirth and caring for a newborn differently.
Three of the more common issues our physios help to treat include:
- Back and Neck Pain
The demands of looking after a newborn baby can lead to back and neck pain as well as shoulder, wrist, or hand pain.
These are usually associated with long duration or repetitive activities like feeding, holding and lifting a newborn baby.
- Abdominal Separation
It is very normal for women to experience abdominal separation during pregnancy. This occurs when the two long muscles in the stomach separate as the uterus grows.
More than a quarter of women (27%) in their second trimester and two thirds (66%) of women in their third trimester experience the condition.
If you suspect you have abdominal separation during pregnancy, you have the best chance of recovery in the first few months after birth.
Learn more about abdominal separation and treatments in our blog here.
- Pelvic Floor Dysfunction
Pelvic floor dysfunction impacts a woman’s ability to control these muscles. It is another key postnatal concern which can be developed through birth or during pregnancy.
We also offer assessment and treatment for pelvic floor dysfunction.
Whether you’re experiencing one (or all) of these common issues our qualified Women’s Health physiotherapists offer hands-on treatment to help you back to full health.
How Soon After Birth Should a New Mum Visit a Physiotherapist?
We recommend any new mums, but particularly those experiencing any unusual pain or discomfort after birth, visit the qualified practitioners at North West Physio as soon as possible following birth or onset.
Often, if treatment and advice can happen earlier, we can help prevent issues from worsening or progressing.
Depending on the hospital that you give birth in, and whether it is private or public, you may also receive an in-hospital consult from a physiotherapist. This is just the first step to regaining your health and strength.
And remember, we look after many women during their pregnancy too!
Caring For Your Body During Pregnancy
Preparing your body for birth and caring for a baby is beneficial for every mum. It can help prevent conditions like abdominal separation and pelvic floor dysfunction worsening.
Caring for your body during pregnancy can be as simple as maintaining your usual exercise and activity.
If you’re not active you may wish to start before becoming pregnant or during pregnancy.
It does not need to be difficult or strenuous activity – some movement and gentle stretching is better than nothing!
Classes for New Mums at North West Physiotherapy
Usually we offer postnatal exercise classes for new mums, however due to Coronavirus, these group sessions are on hold. That said, we can still provide 1:1 sessions, so please contact us to discuss.
We cannot wait to restart our group classes as soon as regulations allow!
