Causes Of Heel Pain
Two main causes of heel pain are Plantar Fasciitis and Achilles Tendonitis.
- Plantar Fasciitis refers to pain which is related to the irritation of the plantar fascia (connective tissue underneath the foot).
- Achilles Tendonitis is a common foot overuse or ankle injury, which involves heel pain or pain on the Achilles tendon, as well as swelling and impaired performance.
Treatment For Heel Pain
Treatment will be dependent on the cause of your heel pain.
It may include a combination of strength training, stretching, and manual treatment such as soft tissue massage and mobilisation.
For Plantar Fasciitis, your health professional may prescribe a range of exercises such as toe curls, calf raises, heel drops and plantar fascia stretched.

If you’re struggling with Achilles Tendonitis, you might be prescribed exercises which concentrate on gradual loading of the Achilles tendon and strengthening of the calf muscles.
They may include heel raises, heel drops and stretches.
Your therapist may also instruct you to modify activities and movements, and carry out exercises to strengthen other important muscles in the legs.
