What Is Tennis Elbow
Tennis Elbow, or Lateral Epicondylitis,is inflammation of the tendon of the muscles that extend to your wrist and fingers.
This swelling and irritation occurs when this part of your body is used more frequently.
Generally, it presents as pain felt down to the wrist or hand 1-3 days after you’ve used the tendon. Pain can also be felt when gripping or lifting.
If this tendon is irritated frequently, its structure can begin to change and break down. This can then lead to secondary issues such as pain and weakness.
Causes of Tennis Elbow
Did you know only 5% of people develop this condition due to tennis?
Here at North West Physio on Brisbane’s northside, we tend to find a lot of people experience tennis elbow during the Summer months or their holiday break, as they’ve got the time and more sunlight hours to tackle more physical chores, like home improvements, around the home.
Treatment of Tennis Elbow
With tennis elbow, planning ahead is crucial to spread the work out and avoid the joint becoming inflamed or uncomfortable. That means allowing time to get the work done and starting off with less intense tasks.
Follow these 3 steps to help alleviate tennis elbow:
- If you’re already experiencing Lateral Epicondylitis let the symptoms settle down initially, by allowing time for rest.
- You can also attempt some stretching and massage.
- Once symptoms begin to resolve you can work on gradually increasing the strength of your tendon. Book a session with our qualified and experience physios to help fast-track and better manage your tennis elbow condition.
