Third Party Physiotherapy

If you’ve left the Australian Defence Force with injuries that haven’t been properly managed, or you’re trying to understand how your DVA card helps you access physiotherapy, you’re in the right place. Many veterans find the gap between entitlement and access confusing, and that confusion often delays treatment that could make a real difference.

This guide explains clearly what DVA physiotherapy covers, how the Gold and White Card systems work, and the steps you can take to start treatment. Whether you’re dealing with a chronic back condition, a knee injury that’s worsened over time, or recovering from surgery, structured rehabilitation is available to you.

If you’d like to find out whether North West Physio can support your rehabilitation under DVA, contact our team and we’ll help confirm your coverage before your first appointment.

Gold Card vs White Card: what DVA physiotherapy covers

DVA White Card

Who it’s for

Veterans with a certain level of service or accepted disability

Veterans with specific service-related conditions accepted by DVA

Physiotherapy coverage

All physiotherapy for any condition, including those unrelated to service

Physiotherapy for accepted service-related conditions only

Referral needed

Generally not required for standard treatment

Generally not required for accepted conditions

No out-of-pocket cost

Typically nil when using a registered DVA physiotherapy provider

Typically nil for accepted conditions

Gold Card holders have the broadest entitlements. DVA physiotherapy is covered for essentially any health condition, not only those linked to military service. This means if you’re managing arthritis, a rotator cuff injury, or general mobility decline alongside a service-related condition, all of it can be treated under the same funded care pathway.

White Card holders are covered for physiotherapy related to conditions that have been accepted by DVA as service-connected. If you’re unsure which conditions are accepted under your card, you can check through MyService MyGov or call DVA directly on 1800 838 372. If a condition hasn’t been formally accepted yet, there is a separate DVA claims process — and while that’s beyond the scope of this article, it’s worth pursuing if you believe a condition is service-related.

How to access DVA Physiotherapy

This is the process many veterans find themselves searching for, and it’s simpler than most people expect.

1. Check your card type.

Confirm whether you hold a Gold or White Card. Gold Card holders can proceed to step three for most conditions. White Card holders should first confirm their accepted conditions through MyService or DVA on 1800 838 372.

2. Contact a registered DVA physiotherapy provider directly.

In most cases, you do not need a GP referral to begin physiotherapy under DVA. You can call the clinic, explain that you hold a DVA card, and book an initial assessment.

3. Bring your DVA card to your first appointment.

Your physiotherapist will confirm your coverage and collect the relevant details.

4. Your physiotherapist manages the approval process.

After your initial assessment, your physiotherapist designs your treatment program and handles any required communication with DVA. You are not expected to navigate this administrative process yourself.

5. Treatment begins – typically at no out-of-pocket cost.

As long as you’re seeing a registered DVA provider, your sessions are billed directly to DVA.

Do you need a GP Referral for DVA physiotherapy?

For most veterans accessing physiotherapy through DVA, a GP referral is not required. You can contact a registered DVA physio provider and book an assessment directly.

For more complex or extended programs, DVA may require what’s known as a treatment cycle approval. In practice, this means your physiotherapist submits a request to DVA outlining your treatment plan and the number of sessions required. DVA typically approves treatment in blocks, and your treating physiotherapist will initiate this process and manage the paperwork on your behalf. You don’t need to lodge the request yourself or contact DVA to organise it. Most veterans don’t need to think about this at all; it’s handled between the clinic and DVA in the background.

If you’re ever unsure about your entitlements or whether a referral applies to your situation, calling DVA on 1800 838 372 or checking dva.gov.au will give you a definitive answer based on your specific circumstances.

How many physiotherapy sessions does DVA cover?

DVA does not apply a hard cap on physiotherapy sessions. Treatment is approved based on clinical need. Your physiotherapist will manage ongoing treatment cycle approvals with DVA as your program progresses, which typically happens in the background without requiring action from you.

DVA physiotherapy for common service-related conditions

Veterans present with a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions shaped by the cumulative demands of military service.

Common conditions treated through DVA physiotherapy include:

Spinal and back conditions — lower back pain, disc injuries, and facet joint degeneration are among the most frequently reported conditions in the veteran population. Physiotherapy focuses on reducing pain, restoring movement, and building the strength and postural control needed for day-to-day function.

Knee injuries — meniscal damage, patellofemoral syndrome, and osteoarthritis are common, particularly in veterans with infantry, combat, or physically demanding trade backgrounds. Rehabilitation programs address strength deficits, movement mechanics, and functional capacity.

Shoulder injuries — rotator cuff tears, shoulder impingement, and instability affect many veterans, often linked to load-carrying, overhead work, or years of physical demands. Targeted physiotherapy and progressive strengthening can restore significant function.

Hip and joint conditions — osteoarthritis and soft tissue injuries around the hip respond well to structured rehabilitation, particularly when exercise-based programs are introduced early.

Post-surgical rehabilitation — if you’ve had a knee, hip, shoulder, or spinal procedure, structured physiotherapy is critical to achieving a meaningful recovery. DVA physiotherapy funding covers post-surgical rehabilitation as part of an integrated care pathway.

Physiotherapy and exercise physiology for comprehensive DVA care

When veterans ask about rehabilitation through DVA, they sometimes encounter the term exercise physiology and aren’t sure how it differs from physiotherapy.

Physiotherapy uses hands-on assessment and treatment (think manual therapy, joint mobilisation, specific exercises, dry needling, and movement retraining) to address pain, dysfunction, and injury. It’s often the first step in a rehabilitation journey.

Exercise physiology focuses on structured, supervised physical activity programs designed to rebuild strength, improve endurance, and restore functional capacity over time. An accredited exercise physiologist works with you on progressive movement programs, often in a gym or structured exercise setting, with specific goals around your physical function and long-term health.

Both services are covered under DVA funding and work well in combination. For veterans managing chronic conditions, the integration of hands-on physiotherapy with a structured exercise physiology program often produces stronger long-term outcomes than either service alone.

Understanding chronic pain and the whole-person approach

Many veterans living with persistent pain that has been present for months or years know that chronic pain rarely exists in isolation. The physical demands of service, ongoing injury, and the experience of persistent pain can all interact with mental health, sleep, and overall wellbeing.

At North West Physio, we take a whole-person approach to veteran rehabilitation. We recognise that managing a long-term condition is more than addressing a single joint or structure. Part of our role in supporting veterans involves understanding their history, goals, and how their physical health connects to the broader picture of life after service. Where relevant, we can work alongside GPs, psychologists, or other treating providers to support a coordinated approach to your care.

What to expect from North West Physio as a registered DVA physiotherapy provider

North West Physio is a registered DVA physiotherapy provider. Our team has experience working with veterans across a full range of musculoskeletal conditions, from acute injuries and post-surgical rehabilitation through to long-term chronic pain management and exercise physiology programs.

When you attend an initial assessment as a DVA patient, we take a thorough history that includes your service background, the cumulative nature of your condition, and your functional goals. Veterans often present with overlapping conditions rather than isolated injuries and treatment planning reflects that complexity. We do not apply a generic approach; your program is built around your specific presentation, your history, and what recovery means for you.

For veterans who have been through multiple rounds of treatment with limited success, structured rehabilitation often produces better outcomes than short-course interventions focused on symptom relief alone.

Information for family members and carers

If you’re supporting a veteran who needs physiotherapy but hasn’t yet accessed treatment, the process is more straightforward than it might appear.

The key steps are simple: confirm the card type, contact a registered DVA physio provider, and attend the first appointment with the DVA card. No GP referral is required in most cases, and the clinic manages the billing and any required communication with DVA directly.

If you’d like to call ahead on behalf of a veteran family member, our team is happy to walk you through what to expect and confirm whether their condition and card type are covered before the appointment is made.
