It’s called the silly season and there’s no denying that the added excitement can result in casualties, so in this blog the team at North West Physiotherapy looks at some common holiday injuries and how to prevent them.
Holiday injuries
Christmas time certainly brings the most unusual injuries into our clinics.
Falls (off ladders and roofs) are very common and usually related to people putting up Christmas lights without due attention to OHS (Occupational Health and Safety).
A sprained ankle after a slip on artificial snow in the front yard was also an injury to remember.
Adults trying out their kid’s Christmas presents (especially skateboards) are a very “popular” cause of injury too.
When the new year rolls around, most of the aches and pains are invariably related to NY resolutions involving hitting the gym, bike or running tracks with a little too much enthusiasm.
Can these injuries be prevented?
Nearly all of these injuries are preventable with just a little thought relating to potential hazards, not trying to rush and not trying to do some of the more difficult tasks on your own.
It’s a lot safer and quicker to get a second person to hold the ladder for you and pass up those Christmas lights to you. Don’t forget to always keep three points of contact on the ladder, your body counts as a point of contact if you need to use both hands.
If you’re starting a New Year exercise regime, always seek the advice of one of our physiotherapists before beginning your new program.
You’re in this for the long haul, so remember slow and steady not only wins the race, but also has a lot fewer injuries!
Christmas holiday opening hours
Our opening hours will be fairly normal over the Christmas holiday period, with Everton Park remaining open on Sundays as well.
The only exceptions are public holidays, Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day, when our clinics will be closed.
