Pregnancy Pilates at North West Physio
Our pregnancy Pilates classes involve exercises for strengthening and mobilising the body. We use a combination of matwork and equipment exercises with a focus on breath control and fluid body movement.
While a pregnant woman can attend a normal Pilates class if they wish, we recommend a pregnancy Pilates class as it is beneficial to have either an instructor trained in pregnancy exercise or attend a pregnancy specific class due to the changes the body experiences.
With clearance from your health care provider you can attend pregnancy classes as soon as you feel comfortable to and continue until you give birth or you no longer feel comfortable doing so.
After you have delivered your baby you may start to attend our post-natal classes from about 6 weeks and usually after your post-natal check from your health care provider.
We require that you attend an initial appointment with one of our Women’s Health Physiotherapists’ who will complete a thorough assessment to help determine any specific requirements and suitability for class.
Benefits of Pregnancy Pilates
During pregnancy it is recommended to aim towards or maintain an exercise program of moderate intensity exercise for at least 20-30 minutes per day on most or all days of the week.
Regular physical activity such as Pilates, during pregnancy, has the following benefits:
- Improving or maintaining physical fitness
- Assistance with weight management
- Reducing the risk of gestational diabetes in obese women
- Enhancing psychological well-being
Pregnancy Pilates Classes
Our Pregnancy Pilates classes are held at our Everton Park Clinic on a Wednesday at 6pm with Post-Natal Pilates also on a Wednesday at 10.30am.
Our Pilates groups provide a supervised, individualised approach to physical activity with specialised advice and education.
Please check with your private health fund to see if your cover includes Pilates.
