If you’ve never been to a physio before, you may be wondering ‘what can I expect from a physio appointment?’
In this blog we look at physiotherapy including appointment times, types of treatment and frequency required.
At North West Physiotherapy, our team of experienced practitioners will customise a treatment plan specific to your needs to create the best healthcare solution for you.
But if you’re feeling a bit daunted ahead of your first appointment, here’s what you can expect from a session with one of our experienced staff members.
Appointment Times
All appointments with a physiotherapist, initial and subsequent, are up to 30 minutes long.
However, you may be in the clinic for a longer period of time if your physio has you engaged in exercises or some other form of self-directed therapy.
After the initial appointment, follow-up times are more treatment focused as there doesn’t need to be a diagnosis. However, before each treatment session begins our trained staff will carry out a re-assessment of your condition.
Re-assessing a patient may take a few minutes.
What Will a Patient be Required to do During Treatment?
As injuries or conditions vary between patients, so will each person’s treatment. We will always assess range of movement, for example reaching upwards for a shoulder problem or bending forward for a back injury.
Body alignment is also very important, so we will always assess your posture and walking pattern. This can provide valuable information relating to the cause of your issue.
We will then perform specific physical tests on various body parts, such as knees and hips for leg pain, to determine the exact origin of your condition.
Treatment Styles
There are a number of therapies which are common to treat a range of conditions. The main types we use are:
- Massage
- Joint mobilisations
- Dry needling
- Exercises
- Stretches
- Heat
How Often are Physio Appointments Required?
The frequency of treatments can vary depending on a patient’s condition and its severity.
Usually an appointment is needed once or twice a week, however for some people they are only required every 3-4 weeks. For a guide on how long physio takes to work, read our blog here.
Your Physiotherapists will assess your condition at every visit and will update your treatment plan each time.
