How Does Dry Needling Work?
Dry needling is the insertion of fine, single-use acupuncture needles into a muscle tissue trigger point which is experiencing pain.
This process stimulates the body’s natural inflammatory response to pain, by activating the natural pathways to switch off muscle spasm and relieve discomfort.
In short, inserting the needle into the muscle tissue elicits a firing of the nerve fibres responsible for pain. This triggers a response in the spinal pathways and deep in the brain to provide relief and a relaxation of the contractile part of the muscle tissues.
Does Dry Needling Hurt?
You may feel a slight small pinch as the needle is inserted, but then they are often not felt at all afterwards.
So, all in all the treatment is pain-free once the needle is inserted. Most people report a feeling of deep relaxation.
What Conditions Does Dry Needling Help?
Dry needling can be used for most musculoskeletal conditions where muscle spasm is involved.
It can also be used for conditions requiring pain relief, such as:
- Headaches
- Tennis elbow
- Achilles tendinopathy and other tendinopathies
Dry Needling and Other Treatments
Physiotherapists are trained in many techniques to assist in the restoration of normal movement, strength and function.
Most treatments will include a range of joint mobilisations, massage, exercise, advice and education and a pain-relieving technique.
Your physiotherapist will find the right combination which best suits your needs and will tailor a personalised treatment plan.
