Hey there, it’s Ellie, your North West Physio Eaton’s Hill exercise phys! I’m thrilled to kick off this blog post where I’ll be sharing some valuable tips on how to make your partnership with your exercise physiologist a roaring success.
Whether you’re recovering from an injury, looking to enhance your performance, or striving for better overall health, I’ve got your back. So, without further ado, let’s dive in and uncover the secrets to success in exercise physiology!
How to get the most out of your exercise phys program
Tip #1: Ask questions
I’m here to help! There are no wrong questions. I find that those who ask more questions and actively involve themselves in the treatment process are better able to understand their condition or injury, often leading to better health outcomes.
These questions can be anything from the treatment duration and expected number of sessions required, to what activities are appropriate or need to be avoided.
Tip #2: Take an active role
To get the most out of your sessions, it’s best to come prepared with any recent reports, scans, or doctor plans if applicable. The more I know, the more I can provide the most appropriate treatment to your case.
Tip #3: Do your homework
What’s an exercise physiology session without exercise? Each time you visit the clinic, you should expect to engage in some form of activity or exercise. Not only that but in most cases, I will prescribe a home exercise program as well for you to complete in your own time.
This is a really important step in the recovery process and compliance versus non-compliance can determine how quickly you rehabilitate an injury or progress to self-management of a chronic condition.
Tip #4: Speak up during sessions
If you feel pain or discomfort while performing a specific exercise, please let me know. It’s your body; you know it best! So, I advise you to listen to it and let me know if something doesn’t feel quite right during your session.
It’s normal to feel some mild soreness during exercise, but a significant increase in pain or severe discomfort that lasts for several hours after exercise and does not improve is usually an indication that something is not working, and it’s best to keep me updated on this so we can modify your program as needed.
It’s also important to understand that pain doesn’t always equal damage or worsening of an injury/ condition, so knowing the difference between pain and muscle soreness can be really helpful.
Tip #5: Follow my guidance
I like to take a collaborative approach with all my clients, and I believe that your input in your own treatment process is necessary for good communication and a mutual understanding of where we’re heading.
Throughout treatment, however, I may ask you to refrain from engaging in certain activities, and it’s vital to follow this advice for several reasons:
- to avoid exacerbating an injury or condition
- to allow for better pain management and healing, and
- ultimately to improve upon your current health.
