Neck Pain and Headaches
How it presents: Gradual onset over time with increasing intensity.
Causes: Related to sitting and sleeping posture. Stress is also a factor.
Treatment options: Posture re-education, stretches, strengthening exercises, massage, gentle joint mobilisations (not harsh cracking), heat, pain relieving creams. Dry needling is extremely helpful in treating neck pain.
North West Physio practice owner and principal physiotherapist Roger McIntosh says there are a few things that can be done to help prevent or even ease neck pain.
“It’s really important to be aware of your sitting posture at work and also get into a regular habit of doing gentle stretches during the day at work,” he said.
“The type of pillow and quality is also important as well as making sure you get enough sleep. It’s easier said than done but also anything that can be done to reduce stress can also help a lot – this can be as simple as getting out of the office for a 20 minute walk on a regular basis.”

Wry Neck
How it presents: Acute (sudden) onset of pain and usually severe in nature. Characterised by severe lack of movement in the neck with it often being locked in one position.
Causes: A temporary locking of the vertebrae in the neck – usually caused by the tiny cartilage between the bones becoming jammed. Made a lot worse by associated muscle spasm which is a protective reaction by the body.
Treatment options: Gentle range of movement exercises, gentle joint mobilisations, stretches, heat, dry needling and massage.
Roger says wry neck, although painful, is unlikely to be a long-term problem, if treated correctly.
“Wry neck usually resolves within 1-2 days,” Roger says.
“It is common in children and younger adults due to their rate of body growth. But if managed properly with a follow up visit (for strengthening exercises) after all symptoms have resolved, it shouldn’t become a recurrent problem.”

Whiplash
How it presents: Severe pain and swelling in the neck and upper back area with associated pain and loss of movement.
Causes: Trauma to the ligaments and muscles in the neck as the body is subjected to forces during a car accident where the head is violently flung in multiple directions as a result.
Treatment options: Treatment can go on for many months and involves a lot of work to encourage healing in the muscles and ligaments, while at the same time restoring range of movement and strength. Massage, stretches and dry needling are important parts of the treatment.
Roger points out the importance of treatment following an accident which leads to whiplash.
“Whiplash can be a long-term problem if not managed appropriately,” Roger says. “And it is essential to fully restore normal muscle function after an injury like this.
