What is Whiplash?
Whiplash is a condition which arises from any trauma to the neck area from an acceleration-deceleration activity (so when the head/neck moves back and forward in a rapid motion).
Our team regularly treats whiplash associated disorder in patients who have suffered a motor vehicle accident and this is where most people have heard of “whiplash” before. In a nose to tail collision the head can be forced into extreme forward flexion followed by extreme extension. The position will vary slightly if the accident was from a sideways force versus a rearward or forward force. However, whiplash isn’t limited to just car accidents. We can often treat Whiplash as a result of a sporting injury. This same head motion can occur in a variety of settings.
How to know if you have Whiplash associated disorder?
Whiplash will usually present as pain in the neck and shoulder region and you may also get headaches. This pain can be caused from a variety of structures including bones, intervertebral discs, joints, muscles, ligaments, nerves or blood vessels.
Other symptoms of Whiplash:
- Loss of balance
- Disturbed eye movement control
- Memory and concentration disturbances
- Sleep disturbances
- Psychological distress- post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, depression
“I think I have Whiplash Associated Disorder, now what?”
Initially after an acute trauma, you will find gentle range gaining techniques (massage, cold packs, acupuncture and relative rest) effective. Your physiotherapist may also recommend small oscillatory motions called mobilisations to regain the natural glides present in normal neck movements. Longer term (2 weeks post injury) we may continue manual therapy and educate you on postural awareness and strengthening to expediate your recovery. Heat therapy may also be recommended at this point.
There is no “one size fits all” solution to pain. If you are experiencing neck or other pain, as a result of Whiplash or not, then an appointment with your Physiotherapist will help. At North West Physiotherapy we are committed to working with you to achieve your goals and getting you back to your happiest, healthiest life!
