Insurance physio

If you’ve recently been in a car accident and you’re dealing with pain, stiffness, or injury, the last thing you want is to face a complicated insurance process on top of everything else. The good news is that CTP physio is more straightforward than most people expect, and your physiotherapy treatment is very likely covered at no out-of-pocket cost to you.

At North West Physio, we work with patients across Brisbane to make this process as simple as possible. This guide explains exactly how it works, what steps to take, and what to expect at your first appointment.

What is CTP physio, and what does it cover?

CTP stands for Compulsory Third Party insurance. Every registered vehicle must carry CTP insurance, which provides cover for people injured in motor vehicle accidents. If you’ve been hurt in a car accident, whether as a driver, passenger, cyclist, or pedestrian, you’re likely entitled to claim physiotherapy treatment through the CTP scheme.

The scheme is administered through the Motor Accident Insurance Commission (MAIC). CTP physio covers a broad range of injuries commonly sustained in accidents, including:

  • Neck pain and whiplash
  • Back and shoulder injuries
  • Soft tissue damage and strains
  • Headaches related to the accident
  • Reduced movement and mobility

The core principle is straightforward: injuries caused by the motor vechile accident, physiotherapy should be treated at no financial cost to you. You do not need private health insurance to access this coverage, and you do not need a GP referral to begin physiotherapy.

How to start a CTP physio claim: 3 simple steps

The entire process comes down to three steps, and we handle most of it for you once you’ve made contact.

Step 1: Identify the CTP insurer and lodge your claim

The CTP policy belongs to the at-fault vehicle, not to you personally. To find out which insurer to contact, check the registration label on the at-fault vehicle. If you don’t have that information, Queensland’s MAIC website at maic.qld.gov.au has a tool to help you identify the correct insurer. If you’re unsure, call us before your appointment, and we can help you work through this step.

When you contact the insurer, you’ll need some basic details: the date, time, and location of the accident, the registration number of the vehicles involved, and a brief description of how the accident occurred. Having a police report number is helpful but not always required at this stage.

Once you’ve reported the accident to the insurer, they’ll issue a claim number. You’ll need this for your appointment.

One important note on timing: claims are generally lodged as soon as possible after the accident. While there are certain timeframes which claims can be made, these can vary depending on the nature and circumstances of your claim. We’d encourage you to seek advice promptly rather than delay, to protect your entitlements.

Step 2: Book your appointment and bring your claim details

Contact us at North West Physio and let us know you’ve been in a motor vehicle accident. We’ll take it from there.

To make your first appointment as smooth as possible, bring the following:

  • Your CTP claim number
  • The date and details of the accident
  • Any medical records or GP notes if you have them
  • A police report reference number if one was filed
  • Your identification

You don’t need all of these to get started. If you’re still waiting on certain details, call us and we’ll advise you on how to proceed.

Step 3: We submit your treatment plan for approval

After your initial assessment, your physiotherapist will prepare a treatment plan outlining your injuries and the recommended course of care. We submit this directly to your CTP insurer for approval. In most cases, approval is granted without delay.

Once approved, we bill the insurer directly for your ongoing treatment. You don’t need to pay upfront and claim back later. The process is designed to remove the financial barrier to getting the care you need.

Treatment plans are reviewed periodically as your recovery progresses. If additional sessions are needed, we submit an updated plan on your behalf. If the insurer requires further information at any stage, we handle that communication directly.

Whiplash treatment

Whiplash is one of the most common injuries sustained in motor vehicle accidents, and one of the most misunderstood. It occurs when the head is suddenly jolted forward and back, placing significant strain on the muscles, ligaments, and joints of the neck. Our team offers dedicated whiplash treatment Brisbane patients can rely on with a structured approach to helping you recover your full range of movement.

One thing many people don’t realise is that whiplash symptoms can be delayed. You may feel reasonably fine immediately after the accident and only begin to notice stiffness, headaches, or restricted movement in the days that follow. This is completely normal and does not mean the injury is less serious.

Common symptoms include:

  • Neck pain and stiffness
  • Headaches, particularly at the base of the skull
  • Shoulder or upper back pain
  • Dizziness or difficulty concentrating
  • Reduced range of movement

Earlier treatment consistently produces better outcomes. If you’ve been in an accident and are experiencing any of these symptoms, even if they seem mild, it’s worth having an assessment sooner rather than later. For symptoms involving the neck specifically, treating neck pain with physiotherapy is an evidence-based approach that can significantly reduce your recovery time. Your motor vehicle accident physiotherapy is covered under the CTP scheme regardless of how significant you think your injury is.

Motor vehicle accident physiotherapy FAQs

Do I need a GP referral to start CTP physio?

No. You can book directly with us. You do not need a referral from a GP to access physiotherapy under the CTP scheme.

What if I wasn’t the at-fault driver?

If you were injured in the accident, you are generally entitled to make a CTP claim regardless of who caused it. This includes passengers, cyclists, pedestrians, and drivers who were not at fault. If fault is disputed or the situation is complex, we’d recommend contacting MAIC directly or seeking legal advice to understand your specific entitlements.

What if I don’t know which insurer to contact?

This is one of the most common points of confusion. Start by checking the registration label of the at-fault vehicle. If you can’t access that information, the MAIC website at maic.qld.gov.au has an insurer identification tool. You can also call our clinic and we’ll help you work through it.

Should I use my private health insurance instead of CTP?

For injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident, CTP is the correct pathway. It is specifically designed for this situation and typically provides more comprehensive coverage for accident-related injuries than a standard private health insurance policy. Using CTP also means your private health benefits remain available for unrelated health needs. If you’re unsure how your cover works more broadly, our post on WorkCover physiotherapy covers related questions about third-party insurance schemes that may also be useful.

Are there any out-of-pocket costs?

In the majority of cases, once your claim is approved, there are no out-of-pocket costs for treatment. We bill the insurer directly on your behalf.

What if my claim takes time to be confirmed?

If you need to begin treatment before your claim is fully processed, speak with us. We can advise you on your options and help ensure there’s no unnecessary delay to starting your recovery.

How long do I have to make a claim?

Timeframes can vary depending on the nature of your claim and individual circumstances. We would always encourage you to act promptly rather than rely on any specific deadline. Contact us or reach out to MAIC to confirm what applies to your situation.
